I closed the comments on the last thread and removed a couple because they revealed the real name of Conflucian blogger dakinikat. I left most of them, but the removal of several does make it a little tough to follow.
I just wanted to reiterate that it’s not permitted to out PUMAs here, as it says in the founding post here. There are several PUMAs out in the open notably, Kim Haas (riverdaughter) and Darragh Murphy (murphy). Many PUMAs don’t hide their identities well (or clumsily reveal them when their FEC prowls are released to the public…), but most are anonymous, and we aim to respect that here.
I admit that I’m curious too sometimes about what kind of person is so warped as to identify with the PUMAs, and often they’re just the kind of person you’d expect to join a hateful fringe group. But in the event that any of them ever seek help and turn their lives around, I don’t think their name should be forever Google-tarred with their PUMA activities. During the campaign, when the PUMAs were hilariousy claiming millions of life-long Democrats in their ranks, it seemed fair game to expose the wingnuts among them for who they were. That time has passed.
There was also some mocking of dakinikat’s ratings as an instructor, and I must leap to her defense. As a former student myself, I can attest that there is a strong sample bias in online rating sites: a student scorned is much more likely to post a review than a student helped or taught well. That’s not to say she’s a good instructor, but just that we can’t know she is a bad one from her student reviews alone.
That said, dakinikat is still a pretentious coot.

are you kidding me, i’d read all of shakespeare before I was a teenager … that book list is at best for 5th and 6th graders
really, let’s get real, he doesn’t speak any languages other than english which is really odd considering his back ground, he can’t paint or draw, he can’t play a musical instrument, the history books he quotes from would be on any typical freshman history reading list, I read the reluctant belligerent as a freshman, hell, by the time I was in 8th grade I was reading chaucer in old english. hell, even I published my first academic textbook at 28 and I didn’t even have the benefit of having gone to ivy leagues … just the university of Nebraska
Since dakinikat gets a lot of mileage over at the Confluence with her ivory tower shtick, I’d point out that she is not only hilariously wrong about Old English, but that my cursory search hasn’t turned up any academic work product. There’s nothing wrong with teaching at a college without a PhD, or not being a tenure track or research professor, but it comes off as little rich when said person is saying anyone who isn’t a multilingual artist is an idiot. That’s besides the hilarity of a grown woman bragging about her grade school reading abilities.
So while dakinikat was reading Chaucer in 8th grade, Obama was smoking pot and drinking in Hawaii. And now Obama is the President. What an idiot.
